USD School of Law – Tax Law Alumni Spotlight: Josh Maxwell

The University of San Diego School of Law’s Tax LLM Alumni Spotlight Series recently featured Hone Maxwell LLP Managing Partner Josh Maxwell (LLM ‘08, JD ‘07).

In a Q&A shared on LinkedIn, Josh discusses why he decided to practice tax law, the many rewarding aspects of his international tax law work,  insights into his academic experiences and a little bit about his interests and strong connection to San Diego.

The international tax law attorney, who also has a background in finance and accounting, says he chose tax law because he was looking for both a challenge and a way to further his career. While earning his LLM in tax, he says he was most impacted by two courses: one allowing him to explore the inter-personal aspects of a tax law practice and another on tax treaties that changed how he thought about the law and the world.

Asked about the most rewarding part of his work, Josh says: “…[I]t is great to help clients deal with and remove burdensome penalties that are both largely unknown yet very harsh.”

He also mentions how his international tax law practice allows him to travel, build relationships and learn about other cultures and legal systems.

Wondering what television Josh likes to watch? “Ted Lasso.” He calls the show “life changing” and will ask himself “what would Ted do?” during times of professional or personal struggles.

Thank you to the USD School of Law – Tax Law for sharing Josh’s story.
