Marisol Swadener, a senior associate attorney at Hone Maxwell LLP, defends clients in audits with the IRS and state taxing authorities, including the Franchise Tax Board (FTB), California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) and the Employment Development Department (EDD). She works with clients on collection issues including liens, levies, installment agreements and offers in compromise. Additionally, Marisol advises on tax planning, compliance and controversy, including various international tax consulting, Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and IRS informational reporting matters.

Marisol’s clients are individuals and small business owners in a variety of industries, from health care to retail to professional services. She helps with collection issues by advising the client on their rights and helping them work with authorities on repayment plans that are realistic. Her experience in audits means she knows how to organize and present the pertinent documentation the government is seeking, resulting in quick and efficient audit processes with minimal exposure to the client. For her international clients, Marisol’s familiarity with U.S. international tax and tax reporting laws allows her to counsel clients on both planning and compliance.

Communication is the cornerstone of Marisol’s customer service approach. She knows clients want to understand the process and how it impacts them, so she walks them through solutions and the potential outcomes so they can make informed decisions. She is bilingual in Spanish, which ensures smooth communications with her cross-border clients.

With a dad who worked as a CPA, Marisol was exposed early to the world of accounting, finance, tax and business. She worked with him when she was in high school, assisting with small audits and tax returns. When she decided to become a lawyer, she coupled her previously established interest in tax law with her love for math and focused on becoming a tax attorney. She enjoys helping clients, many of whom often find that audits and compliance aren’t as scary as they think.

A Southern California native, Marisol graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Economics. She earned her law degree from California Western School of Law and her master of law degree in Taxation from the University of San Diego, School of Law.

During law school career, Marisol served as president of the La Raza Law Student Association and co-founded the Tax Law Society. Prior to joining HMLLP, Marisol worked as an attorney with a tax law firm in a similar role, assisting clients with controversy matters including audits, collections and international tax.

She lives in Oceanside with her husband, Kyle, their son and their two pups, Luna and Bella.
