
Jared Garfield advises U.S.-connected individuals, families, and multinational businesses on complex U.S. international tax and cross-border matters. He guides clients through compliance challenges involving unreported foreign assets, structures cross-border succession and estate plans, and navigates U.S. tax implications for foreign trusts with U.S. beneficiaries or assets. Jared also counsels businesses on strategic expansion and restructuring across the U.S. and Asia.
Jared helped expand Hone Maxwell LLP into Asia in January 2024, when the firm opened its Singapore office. He is also instrumental in building the firm’s regional network, enabling clients to connect with trusted professionals across Asia for a wide range of financial and legal needs. As a California-licensed attorney based in Asia, Jared creates the global nexus that is critical for tax and business law compliance. He holds a Certificate of Registration of Foreign Lawyer to Practice U.S. law in Singapore, allowing him to provide legal advice and services on U.S. matters in Singapore from Hone Maxwell Singapore LLP, a registered foreign law practice in Singapore.
As part of HMLLP’s Global Private Counsel (GPC) team, Jared supports international clients from Asia by providing on-the-ground U.S. legal insight and coordinating cross-border tax and business matters as part of GPC’s unified, advisory level approach.
While earning his Juris Doctor and Master of Laws in Taxation at the University of San Diego School of Law, Jared Garfield gained nearly two years of hands-on experience as a law clerk at HMLLP, working on international tax matters. Jared previously worked with the University of San Diego Federal Tax Clinic. There, he assisted low-income taxpayers with their federal tax problems including collection issues, offers in compromise, and federal tax appeals. Jared also worked as an intern at the Taxpayers’ Rights Advocates Office in San Diego on the Tax Appeals Assistance Program. There, he conducted legal and factual research to help people with their California state tax appeals, drafted appeals briefs and client advice letters and communicated with opposing counsel to help clients resolve their cases.
While earning his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University – Idaho, Jared conducted research supporting businesses and nonprofits and served as a teaching assistant in microeconomics.
Jared finds helping people solve their problems to be very rewarding. He brings a fresh
perspective and innovative ideas to complex areas of international tax laws.
