Hone Maxwell LLP Associate Attorney Connor E. McGettigan provides guidance on tax planning, tax compliance and tax controversy for businesses and individuals both in the U.S. and those living or operating abroad. He helps resolve tax compliance issues for taxpayers stemming from businesses and accounts located outside the United States and represents clients when disputes arise over assessments, audits, collections and penalties by federal, state and local tax authorities.

Connor also assists clients with coming into compliance with their U.S. tax and reporting obligations. This is done by working directly with clients to gather the necessary information to report to U.S. authorities as well as by providing guidance on what programs are available to taxpayers through the IRS. Based on this work, several clients have had their costly tax penalties and interest reduced and, in some cases, eliminated.

Connor served as a law clerk at HMLLP during his last two years of law school. Before that, he served as a clerk at two other law firms, including one where his work focused on supporting trusts and estate law attorneys. While earning his law degree at the University of San Diego School of Law, Connor was a member of the school’s Tax Law Society. He also served as a student advocate at the University of San Diego Federal and State Income Tax Clinics, advocating for low-income clients undergoing IRS audits and in their California tax appeals cases. He provided more than 100 hours in pro bono work during law school, earning him the USD Law School’s Pro Bono Recognition Award. In addition, he was a legislative intern for the U.S. House of Representatives, conducting research for op/ed articles and legislation and handling constituent communications.

Connor, often described as a “go-getter” who doesn’t shy away from challenges, embraces the opportunity to resolve issues in the face of ever-changing tax laws and helping clients achieve peace of mind in their tax controversies.
