Hone Maxwell LLP Singapore Associate Attorney Angelo Herbosa provides business and tax law advice to clients who have cross-border interests, particularly between Asia and the United States. He advises clients on business establishment, mergers and acquisitions, tax exposure, estate management, reporting requirements, and intellectual property, among other fields. He is a dual-licensed attorney in both the Philippines and California; however, as a member of HMLLP Singapore, he advises and represents under United States law. As a Filipino attorney, he has the background and cultural
understanding that allows him to coordinate seamlessly with local colleagues — providing comprehensive legal service that combines the Asian legal perspective and U.S. law.
Angelo is an integral part of HMLLP’s operations in Asia. His experience handling matters in the ASEAN region, particularly the Philippines, coupled with American know-how, helps him provide clients with comprehensive advice layered with invaluable local and practical context. These services also form the backbone of HMLLP’s Global Private Counsel service.
Prior to joining HMLLP, and before pursuing U.S. legal education, Angelo worked for four years as an associate at one of the most prestigious firms in Manila, where he advised both local and multinational clients on a vast array of legal matters. Particularly, he has pleaded before all court levels and several administrative bodies in the Philippines. He was also part of teams that closed notable M&A deals in the energy and real estate sectors, lobbied before government agencies, and provided intellectual property advice to conglomerates.
He then joined one of the Big Four accounting firms as an associate and assisted in establishing its legal operations in Manila. For two years, he primarily helped multinational corporations navigate Filipino regulations in line with establishing business in the country. He also provided tax advice and representation to both local and multinational entities in relation to their Philippine and regional operations and worked with the firm’s other offices in Asia and Europe on M&A matters that were being contemplated on local and regional levels.
A Filipino American, Angelo was born in San Mateo, Calif., and grew up in Manila, so both places are considered home. He earned his Master of Laws from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where he took courses on business and comparative law, and graduated with a certification in technology and intellectual property law. He earned his law degree, with honors, from the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law, where he graduated with a specialization in corporate law while editing
the Ateneo Law Journal for three years, heading it during his 4L year, and publishing three articles with renowned Philippine practitioners.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in management from the Ateneo de Manila University with a minor in international business. As an undergrad, he was a sportswriter for the university’s newspaper and took part in the school’s social justice initiatives.
Angelo takes pride in finding practical and creative solutions for clients’ legal concerns. He brings not only considerable legal experience, but he does so with a personal touch.
Angelo lives in Manila with his fiancée but travels regularly to Singapore.
