As we’ve seen from the Hone Maxwell LLP team’s previous videos, business travel for this law firm is rarely just about business.
During Managing Partner Josh Maxwell’s latest trip to Panama and Miami, he mixed seminars and meetings with family time, caught up with longtime friends and colleagues, made some new connections, ate very well (of course), and came home with plenty to think about.
This trip was particularly special because Josh and his wife were joined by their son and nephew to celebrate their high school graduations. It gave them a chance to see a little of what Josh and the team do when they travel for HMLLP, while providing some time to explore together along the way.
Business, Brainstorming, and Great Food in Panama
Panama City was the first stop. Josh and family kicked off the visit from the rooftop at Tantalo. It’s hard to beat a great view and good, traditional food after a day of travel.
But there was plenty of work ahead.
The firm’s seminar in Panama was particularly timely because of Ley 526, a new law establishing economic substance requirements for certain Panamanian entities that are part of multinational groups and receive passive income from foreign sources.
What began as a presentation by Josh and Associate Attorney Leslie Miranda became more of a group brainstorming session. Discussion turned toward how the new law could affect investors moving capital or doing business from other parts of Latin America through Panama and into the United States.
Those conversations are one of the reasons we travel. International tax and business issues rarely exist neatly within one country’s borders. Having professionals from different jurisdictions in the same room, sharing perspectives and asking questions, can help us identify issues and potential strategies that we can continue exploring for our clients.
Miami: Meetings, Marlins and More
Josh and his family fit in some fun before the work began. They caught a Miami Marlins game, took an airboat ride through the Everglades, had dinner on Miami Beach, and explored Little Havana. They enjoyed some time with the team, too, including Leslie, Business Consultant Daniel Zaibert, and Senior Associate and Tax Controversy Director Samantha DePrima.
Then it was back to business. The team presented an update on U.S. tax laws that affect international business and wealth strategies, especially in LATAM.
Miami continues to be an important place for HMLLP as we build relationships with professionals, businesses, investors, and families throughout Latin America. The city serves as a natural connection point between the U.S. and Latin America, making it an ideal place for conversations about cross-border tax, business, and wealth planning.
Until the Next Trip
This trip was both very typical and completely different from many of Josh’s previous travels.
Like always, there were presentations, meetings, new contacts, and old friends. But there was also the chance to bring family along, explore new places together, and introduce his son and nephew to some of the people and experiences that have become such an important part of his work.
And, as usual, the best part was the people. Thank you to everyone in Panama and Miami who welcomed the team, shared ideas, asked thoughtful questions, and made time to connect.
