Two members of the Hone Maxwell LLP team are among the newest members of the State Bar of California! Jared Garfield and Connor McGettigan joined HMLLP as law clerks while working toward their J.D. and LL.M in taxation degrees at the University of San Diego School of Law. Having graduated, sat for and passed the rigorous California Bar exam in 2023, we are excited Jared and Connor are now associate attorneys ready to continue utilizing their tax and international tax law knowledge and skills to help our clients.
“Getting sworn in was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication and I’m looking forward to taking the knowledge I’ve learned throughout law school and using it to help my clients with their tax problems as a third generation California attorney,” Connor said.

Based in HMLLP’s San Diego office, Connor provides tax planning and compliance guidance for individuals and businesses alike, catering to those within the U.S. as well as those residing or operating in other countries. He also handles tax controversy matters, advocating against audits, addressing tax debt in collections and mitigating penalties. He has already helped clients avoid costly tax penalties and secure reductions — or eliminations — in interest.
“I chose a career in tax law because it’s a complex and dynamic field requiring analytical thinking and continuous learning,” Jared said. “I also enjoy helping clients navigate intricate legal challenges and find satisfaction in contributing to a more just and equitable society.”

Jared works from HMLLP’s Singapore office, which will open its doors later this month. Jared focuses on U.S. international tax and business law, offering guidance to both businesses and individuals. He ensures compliance with U.S. international tax reporting requirements, particularly for U.S. citizens and green card holders, as well as taxpayers in Asia who have assets and beneficiaries in the U.S. He plays a vital role in facilitating cross-border business, aiding clients who are looking to expand into Asia and serving as a consultant and intermediary for Asian investors and businesses seeking to enter the U.S. market. Jared’s position in Asia, combined with his legal acumen, helps form HMLLP’s crucial global connection for navigating the complexities of tax and business law compliance.
Both Jared and Connor expressed gratitude to their friends, family, educators and the HMLLP team for supporting them while they worked toward their accomplishments.
“I consider us and our clients extremely lucky to have had Jared and Connor join HMLLP early in their careers,” said Managing Partner Josh Maxwell. “We all benefit from their vibrant, fresh perspectives on tax law and they quickly became valuable members of the firm. I’m excited for their achievements and look forward to watching and supporting their growth as international tax lawyers.”
